Open edX
Purpose
Large-scale learning platform with LMS, Studio authoring, modern frontends and extensive integration points.
Decision Summary
Enterprise/large-academy candidate requiring dedicated Linux/Docker operational ownership.
Use Cases
Universities, MOOCs, large academies, complex learning programs, reusable content and LTI integrations.
Field Notes
Never use master/nightly for normal production. Track named-release EOL and document every XBlock, MFE and Tutor plugin.
Hardware Requirements
64-bit Unix host with modern Docker/Compose. Lab minimum 4 GB RAM/2 CPU/8 GB; recommended development baseline 8 GB/4 CPU/25 GB; production needs greater workload-based sizing.
Backup Strategy
Tutor configuration/plugins, SQL and Mongo data, uploaded content/object storage, themes, custom images, secrets and TLS.
Recovery Strategy
Deploy the same named Tutor release, restore state and validate Studio publishing, LMS, MFEs, jobs, email and integrations.
Secure Boot Notes
Not directly applicable to this web/server platform. Keep Secure Boot enabled on supported host OS or hypervisor and use signed host components.
Version History
Named releases occur about every six months; only the latest named release is community-supported. Tutor is the recommended distribution.
